Berkshires

The Berkshire breed has taken a leading role in answering the need for a meatier, trimmer hog for the American market.

The Berkshire breed the past several years has experienced a tremendous upsurge in quality, popularity, numbers, and commercial acceptance.

The Berkshire is known for its soundness, aggressiveness in breed boars, and the sow's ability to farrow good sized litters and be docile in the farrowing house. For four years running the Berkshire breed was evaluated as tops in soundness of all breeds at the National Barrow Show Production Test. Berkshires are also known to be able to withstand cold weather better than most breeds.

Berkshire breeding is often used to upgrade the vigor of a commercial herd because the breed is not closely related to most other breeds, and because Berks are characteristically very hardy, rugged hogs.
